Do I REALLY REALLY need hotmail for Xbox Live?

For making a gamertag for Xbox Live, is hotmail the mandatory email address you have to type in or can you use other emails like gmail or yahoo?

what you need is a passport account. When you sign up with Hotmail or MSN, this is part of it. (the both are together)

But you can also sign up with another e-mail address.

I had a Microsoft Passport account already. and it wasn't with hotmail (who wants all that spam). I have always just used my own ISP e-mail address.
Reply:wait til u turn on ur xbox and theyll help u create a windows live account which is really waht u need. u dont need hotmail... u can sign up before u get ur xbox at xbox.com as well.
